Tips on surviving the heatwave

Fainting has become more frequent recently due to the ongoing heatwave. Let's explore some causes, preventions and steps to take when in such situations.

How Fainting Occurs in Heatwaves

  • Fainting typically occurs when the body becomes overwhelmed by heat and its mechanisms to regulate temperature or blood pressure fail. The resulting drop in blood flow to the brain causes a temporary loss of consciousness.

  • It’s often triggered when someone stands up after sitting or lying down, because the blood is already struggling to circulate efficiently. The rapid movement increases the chance of a drop in blood pressure, which can result in fainting.

Preventing Fainting During Heatwaves

To avoid fainting or heat-related illnesses during hot weather:

  • Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, and replenish electrolytes with sports drinks if necessary.

  • Avoid direct sun exposure: Stay in the shade or indoors during the hottest parts of the day.

  • Wear lightweight, light-coloured clothing: This helps with body cooling.

  • Take frequent breaks: If you're outside or exerting yourself, take rest breaks in cooler areas.

  • Use fans or air conditioning: In extreme heat, staying in a cool environment can prevent overheating.

Steps to take if someone faints:

  1. Check for responsiveness and ensure they are breathing.

  2. Place them on their back in a safe, flat position.

  3. Elevate their legs slightly (if possible), which can help blood flow to the brain.

  4. Ensure the area is safe and they are not at risk of injury.

  5. Monitor their breathing and consciousness.

If the person doesn’t regain consciousness quickly, starts having trouble breathing, or shows signs of a serious condition (like a heart attack), call emergency services immediately and begin CPR if necessary.
